About

December 21st 2012 is supposed to be the end date of the world. On this day many catastrophic and

celestial events have been set to happen. This day has been marked by a number of ancient cultures and

civilizations throughout time as a day of coming, and a day of end. It’s supposed to mark the end or

“recycling” of the Mayan calendar. The real life of the Maya revolved around their calendar and the concept of

time. They used math in symbols of dots and circular shapes along with celestial bodies of alignment to

dictate what time and date it was. The Mayans are known for their keen sense and understanding of

astronomy and it’s said that they are truly the first civilization to map the night sky. Even more incredible is

their understanding of numbers and math. If you can think for a second, the concept of zero - nothing. The

Romans had a very difficult time with this concept and in theory, zero is something that’s impossible to

prove. How can you prove nothing? The Mayans have proof of the concept and an early understanding by

using a elliptical shaped shell to represent the zero, nothing, and infinite. Because of this, the Mayan

calendar was made in the shape of a circle and the last date on the circle is 2012, a beginning and an end.

Some would say that this is all hogwash but the Mayan calendar dates back 3,00 years while our western

calendar only dates back half that amount. They also did not have the instruments of the 16th century and

they managed to calculate a solar year by less than a thousandth of a day short. More accurate than the

Europeans. It’s no wonder why so many people have marked the end of the Mayan calendar as the end of all

days.
